During World War II the Admiralty requisitioned a number of Fishing Vessels including Trawlers, Drifters and other vessels such as private yachts. Additionally they built a large number of Motor Fishing Vessels (MFV’s), nearly a thousand in all. All these boats were used for various purposes including minesweeping, boom defence vessels, safety craft and much more. The MFV’s were mainly used for harbour duties and as tenders to major ships but were quite capable of sea going tasks and were well used in that capacity.
Morgan Giles received an order for two of these craft on 7th December 1944. There were various versions of these vessels but this particular order was for a 61½ft design. The drawing designates these as 161 and 162 but I can find no record of this number which relates to these vessels. It was planned that if the war was over before completion they would be turned over to the fisheries. They are reported as being fine craft powered by Widdop diesels. Both vessels were sent to Scotland on completion
