The Morgan Giles Register Dragon
Johan Anker of the boatyard Anker & Jensen was an accomplished yacht designer and sailor. The Dragon Keel Boat was designed for a competition run by the Royal Gothenberg Yacht Club in 1927 to produce a cruiser/racer that was smaller and less expensive for younger people. Anker’s Dragon design won that competition. The design fitted within the 20 metre rule and soon became popular in the Scandinavian countries, Germany and Britain.
In 1948 the Dragon was chosen as the Olympic Class 3 man keel boat and retained this honour until 1972.
This classic boat is still very popular today and is still being built and raced. Originally of wood construction more modern methods have overtaken the class.
Three Dragon Class were built by Morgan Giles in 1959/60, Daphne, Phantom and Mistress, the last of which was retained by Morgan Giles himself.
