The Morgan Giles Register Six Metre

The 6 metre class, better known as the ‘sixes’ date from the early part of the 20th century and the introduction of the International Rule. Morgan-Giles had a keen interest in the International classes at that time and designed and built his first 6 metre yacht Claire in 1909 for George May, a relative of his partner.

From 1908 up to 1952 the 6 metre was one of the Olympic Class and the rules were updated as time went by to keep abreast of technical innovation while keeping the heritage of the class intact. There was a downturn during and after WW2 but in later years this class has re-emerged and now has a thriving community.

Overall Morgan Giles built some 14 of the 6 metre class at the Hammersmith yard and the Hythe yard of Morgan Giles & May and four more after the yard opened in Teignmouth.  The four Teignmouth built 6 Metres were WHIMBREL and MARGARET built in 1921, the second for Lord Birkenhead, DANA in 1927 and GOLDEN HIND the last built for the 1948 Olympics. The most famous of these and the only surviving one of the four being DANA that is still competing today. Over the years many more were built at other yards to Morgan Giles design.
