In 1939 famed British yacht designer, builder and racer, Francis Charles Morgan Giles, launched Myosotis (later Ailanthus) at his boat yard, Morgan-Giles Ltd., in Teignmouth, England for use as his personal yacht. Ailanthus is a long, lean and fast 43’ teak hulled ocean racing yacht that raced successfully in England including winning her division in the Isle of Wight race while retracing the original course of the Hundred Guinea’s Cup, later named the America’s Cup. She was eventually purchased by Lord Amory, a member of the British Parliament and Exchequer of the Treasury, for use as a youth sail training vessel. Lord Amory sold her to a young American in 1971 who took her to Africa, loaded her with hashish and sailed her across the Atlantic Ocean to South Carolina where he was promptly arrested and sent to prison. That adventure is detailed in a cover story in High Times magazine. In 1981 I purchased Ailanthus in Miami and sailed her through the Caribbean Islands then north to Bermuda and on to Martha’s Vineyard. She rode a truck to Seattle in 1984 and I then sailed her in the Pacific Northwest and Canada until I sold her in 1994 to a young shipwright on Vashon Island. He built a boat shed at his house for her where he began her restoration. Work on Ailanthus eventually slowed as he got married, built a new house and started a family. He recently contacted me and asked if I could help him find a new home for Ailanthus. She is currently stored undercover in Bellingham, Washington and is available for purchase and the completion of her restoration.
