It has been many years since the Morgan Giles shipyard in Teignmouth has been in operation and yet interest in the yard and its products remains high. This is due to the quality of the designs, the workmanship, and the number of boats produced many of which are still in use today.
During the Napoleonic Wars sixty eight ships were built on the Teign but after peace was declared shipbuilding declined until John Mansfield came to Teignmouth in 1849.Mansfield set up his ship building business in what became known as the Strand Shipyard. He came from a shipbuilding family and had managed his father's yard in Lyme Regis and had gained further experience in Portsmouth Dockyard.
